One step at a time.

Right now, I’m sitting at home with an empty fridge and pantry, waiting to head out to restock. Adam left on Tuesday for a work trip to Nashville. I was going to be getting him from the airport tonight, but I won’t be seeing him until Saturday. Yesterday, we found out that his dad needed emergency open-heart surgery first thing this morning. Thankfully, it went well. Next week, my grandma has a risky surgery scheduled. This month, I tell you.

Once we found out about his dad, Adam dropped everything and headed to Orlando as quickly as he could. Meanwhile, I am nine hours away with two dogs. I was going to leave first thing this morning, but Adam advised me to stay home. Our dogs aren’t really the best for environments that need to be as stress-free as possible and this heat wave would make traveling with them just that much more difficult. Plus, Adam needs to focus on being there for his mom and not worry about me. So, here I stay.

The more I focus on the good, the more relieved I am. This is so much better than the alternative and what could have happened. It also has motivated me to clear out our pantry and fridge and clean up our diets even more so. I am taking myself on a little cheer-up date to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s to restock and I’m actually looking forward to it, strangely. I usually hate grocery shopping, but I’m feeling pretty motivated. I’m also going to be helping my in-laws to restock as best as I can being hundreds of miles away. Lifestyle changes, you know.

This has been a tough month, but I’ve seen so much good come out of it as well. A lot of lessons learned, a lot of prayers answered. Mainly just appreciating my family so much more. Not that I didn’t before, but it’s times like this that remind me how blessed I am to have them in my life. I believe in talking about my joys more than my hardships and focusing on the good. This is life and sometimes the hardest parts come all at once. All we can do is put one foot in front of the other.
