This is going to sound silly.

But after 24 1/2+ years I’ve finally figured out how to use a curling iron.

Mostly just to make waves. I’ve tried so many tutorials and could never figure out what didn’t click. It was simply how I was holding the curling iron and wrapping my hair. Bam! Like magic. Feels silly that it took me this long. But it did. I tried and tried and it always came out super wacky.

Of course, this required an impromptu photo shoot.

Okay, we didn’t need so many pictures of it..but I’m excited! I never really feel super “put together” and this style makes me feel very put together, even in a hoodie and jeans. My hair is naturally thick, curly and frizzy. I love the relaxed and soft waves. This may just be how I wear my hair all winter long.

I love finding new ways to style myself and I think anything that makes us feel better about ourselves is worth celebrating, even with a silly little blog post! Now not only can I trim my own bangs but I can add curling iron conquerer to the list. Booyah! Yep, I broke out the booyah..can you tell I’m excited?

P.S. It was thanks to Pinterest that I finally figured it out. Right here, actually. It was the picture of how she wrapped and held her hair, but there’s also a great tutorial on how to get those waves on her blog as well!

  • Don’t feel bad, it took me 28 years to figure it out! And I am still not that good with a curling iron, thank goodness I found tutorials on how to make waves with my flat iron!

  • My gosh you’re beautiful, Katy! Love the hair. :)

  • Phew! Glad I’m not alone. I was starting to believe people were either born with the skill or not. It was that bad. My prom hair was actually curled with a flat iron. My iron is too wide to make waves, though. My cheapy Conair does the trick!

  • Pretty! And love the red lips!

  • I love the waves!! Your hair reminds me of Zoey Deschanel’s like that (which is a total compliment). My hair is actually naturally wavy, but it still needs a boost of the curling iron for me to wear it that way. I’ll check out the tutorial!

  • That just made my day. She’s the first one whose hair I wanted because of the waves. YAY! I love her. Thank you!! :)

  • Awwww, Krystina. Thank you!! I appreciate the sweet comment. :)

  • Thank you! I’m going to be investing in red lipstick soon, this was a gloss from a palette I got for Christmas. I’ve been wearing more red lipstick since I dyed my hair dark. :) Somes I chicken out, but I love them!

  • So pretty! Yes, very Zooey, too. (Who I have a major girl crush on.)

So my question is…the picture of you on your main blog page (the left side), is your hair dried naturally there? Because I think it looks gorgeously curly there.

  • Ahh, so you are GORGEOUS! Love this look on you! I can’t wait to grow my hair to be able to do it myself.

  • I have to confess, pinterest is where I learned to do my waves, too. We have the same hair!

  • Totally agree with the Zoey D comment- LOVE her too! Was waiting to read that you were going to be her for Halloween- there is an idea if you need one! PRETTY!!!
